Peoria, a city just 14 mi (23 km) northwest of Phoenix, Arizona,
has the unique attribute of having changed both little and much since
its inception. What started off simply as a prospective farming
community in the 1880s has grown to include a population of over
120,000, yet Peoria has maintained its small town charm and atmosphere.
Its success is largely due to a winning tri-fecta of its natural
environment, close proximity to Phoenix and a year-round climate of
sunshine with daily temperatures averaging 86°F (30°C).
Not surprisingly then, Peoria places an emphasis on outdoor and
sporting activities. Hills interspersed throughout the city, known as
the Sunrise,
West
Wing and East
Wing Mountains, are home to several hiking trails, while Lake
Pleasant at the city’s northern end is a haven for water
enthusiasts. As Arizona’s second largest body of water, the lake has
two marinas–including Pleasant
Harbor–and is popular for its sailing, water-skiing and
fishing opportunities. Peoria is also home to Major League Baseball
when many of the league’s teams come to Arizona for spring training and
baseball fans can catch both the Seattle
Mariners and the San
Diego Padres in action at the Peoria
Sports Center. And for something novel, visitors
and locals can enjoy an excursion to the Challenger
Space Center, which features simulated flight missions.
